Compulsory Gear

Compulsory competitor gear

Use these checklists when packing for the event to ensure you have all the compulsory items.

Stay organised by packing your gear by stage into large containers. Tape this list onto the container, you and your support crew will always know what you are meant to have and when.

If you are racing with no support crew, then you will be provided with bag tags/stickers to clearly identify each transition bag/box.

This gear is the minimum requirement while competing. If you have a bad injury and need to remain in one place, especially in poor conditions, for an extended period of time you will need ALL of these items.

Consider your speed and the conditions when choosing gear. The lightest gear will not be as robust or as warm as some other options, so choose based on your ability and if in doubt ask us!

Your compulsory gear may be spot checked at any time during the race or at the stage finish. Failure to present the full kit will result in a time penalty.

Stage 2 and 5 Cycles

Note: Stage 2 is draft legal. Stage 5 is NON-DRAFTING,  you must remain 10m behind another competitor or pass within 30 seconds. Once passed, the overtaken cyclist must drop back 10m

  • Bicycle (mountain bike is not recommended – all cycling is on sealed roads).

Aero-bars and time trial bikes are allowed. Competitors are solely responsible for the maintenance and safety of your bicycling equipment and ensure your bike is in good working order for the event. It is recommended that you have your bike serviced prior to the event and that you check it after transit.

  • Helmet must be CE standards approved. Correctly fitted and free of defects / cracks.
  • Front & rear cycle lights must be working and switched-on during hours of darkness. Battery to be fully charged or new batteries. Required on both cycle stages.
  • Cycle tool kit, including pump, spare tube / tubular, tools to enable completion of roadside tyre change.
  • Hi-Viz will be required to be worn on Stage 5 after the hours of 7pm. This can be worn over the race bib in this case.

Stage 3 Mountain Run

The compulsory gear clothing is in addition to what is being worn by the competitor when entering the mountain run stage. We suggest synthetic, natural or composite thermal products. Cotton is unacceptable.

  • Waterproof jacket with hood (Seam sealed and constructed of durable material, minimum 10,000mm waterproof rating).
  • Waterproof pants (Seam sealed and constructed of durable material).
  • Gloves – No specific weight requirement.
  • Thermal hat – No specific weight requirement.
  • Basic First aid kit – to include a minimum of 1 dressing pad (field dressing), roll bandage, plasters.
  • Survival Blanket/Bag
  • Backpack – Must be large enough to fit all compulsory gear and food – recommend putting clothing into Ziploc bags to keep dry – do not vacuum pack gear.
  • Drink bottles – Something to carry water on the run, handheld-bottle, bladder or soft flasks.
  • Whistle – Attached to outside of pack or bib.

Stage 4 Kayak

Competitor must dress appropriately for the kayak stage. You may be pretty warm coming off the mountain run so a paddle jacket is recommended to keep warm while on the water, it’s a lot easier to cool down than warm up. Consider the forecast and stop and fix things early if you realise you’ve layered poorly. Remember, a bit of extra weight in your kayak will have almost no effect on your time.

  • Kayak – Must be suitable for the level of paddler. Kayak must have a grab loop or toggle at the nose of the kayak. Any restraints/leashes that restrict exit from the kayak are prohibited (excludes back band and thigh braces). Inflatables not permitted.
  • Sit on top kayaks can be hired during online registration.
  • Bouyancy vest (PFD) – Securely fitting, free of defects and of 50N minimum buoyancy.
  • Whistle – Attached to outside of PFD or bib.
  • Sufficient food/water  for the duration of the stage.
  • Extra layers incase of foul weather, recommended that you carry an additional waterproof layer, fleece layer and hat, gloves in a dry bag.

Stage 6 Run

  • Headtorch – must have a 200 lumens minimum brightness. Fully charged/new batteries.

Race Bibs

One bib and GPS tracker is provided per individual. Bibs must not be altered in any way and must be worn throughout the event. The bib must be your outermost garment, during stages 1/2/4, even over thermals, jackets, PFD etc.

Bibs can be worn under a running backpack during stages 3 and 6. Should competitors still be on stage 5 after 7pm then Hi-Viz will be required to be worn, this can be worn over the race bib in this case.

Failure to display your number as requested will lead to you being stopped until officials can accurately determine your bib number.
